What We Do

Boating Education & Safety Equipment Specialty Classes
WWSA is driven by a commitment to serve diverse communities with varied ethnic and economic backgrounds along the southern shores of Lake Michigan, spanning predominantly from Wilmette Illinois to Racine Wisconsin, recognizing an increased need for comprehensive boating safety education and training. WWSA focuses its resources in and around Waukegan and the surrounding communities.
At WWSA, we bridge the gap by providing essential resources and funding to support the Coast Guard Auxiliary—a dedicated team of trained volunteers, including veterans and individuals who have served our country. Our facilities serve as a hub for these experienced volunteers to host classes, sharing their knowledge and expertise.
Our focus extends beyond traditional boating education. We emphasize in classes teaching the use and importance of specialty boating and safety equipment, often overlooked by recreational boaters. By offering classroom facilities and teaching resources, we aim to enhance awareness and understanding of these critical aspects, ensuring safer and more enjoyable experiences on the water. What boaters learn locally can be a lifesaver on any water, including other lakes, oceans and inland waters. “This training lasts a lifetime!”
Donations to WWSA are used to allow the Auxiliary to offer classes in a professional environment, so they can continue to keep our waters safe. Together, we can create a community that values responsible boating and prioritizes safety on Lake Michigan’s southern shores and local inland waters.

Boater Free Vessel Safety Checks & Disaster Preparedness
Enjoying the water is a wonderful experience, but unforeseen challenges can arise when you least expect them. To promote a secure boating environment, the US Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boaters, including personal watercraft and paddle sport enthusiasts, take advantage of free Vessel Safety checks conducted in and around WWSA’s facilities made exclusively available to the dedicated and proud volunteer members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Our goal is simple: to make sure boaters have the necessary equipment for a fun and safe day on Lake Michigan. This complimentary service aims to identify potential issues and ensure that your vessel is well-prepared for any unexpected situations.
Lake Michigan, with its vast expanse, has the power to turn a pleasant day on the water into a challenging situation. The frequency of accidents and fatalities is best curtailed by boater education and the free vessel safety checks. Understanding how to prepare for and mitigate disasters becomes crucial, especially in a large body of water like Lake Michigan, known for its capacity to change course without warning.
Volunteers from the US Coast Guard Auxiliary possess firsthand experience and offer valuable guidance. They provide instructions on handling various potentially dangerous situations that can rapidly unfold while boating on Lake Michigan and local inland waters. WWSA provides myriad tools for the Auxiliary members to provide this invaluable community service.

Search & Rescue, Member Training & Equipment Procurement
WWSA’s direct support of Auxiliary Search and Rescue program plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of boaters on Lake Michigan, a vast expanse stretching 307 miles in length and 118 miles in width. This recreational haven, attracting millions, is home to 4.3 million registered boats, making water activities an integral part of our regional culture.
Lake Michigan’s stunning landscape, however, conceals unforeseen dangers. Unpredictable weather conditions have the potential to transform a leisurely day on the water into a perilous situation. Picture the urgency of needing assistance amid an unexpected storm or the vulnerability of a child unfamiliar with water safety.
In these challenging moments WWSA, through its Auxiliary support, steps in to provide critical equipment, facilities and resources. The Auxiliary Search and Rescue program is committed to safeguarding the well-being of boaters facing emergencies on Lake Michigan. Whether it’s a distress call during adverse weather or a situation involving a young boater, WWSA is here to provide vessels and specialty equipment to allow the Auxiliary to respond promptly and effectively.
By supporting WWSA you are benefitting Auxiliary Search and Rescue to those in need. WWSA needs their boats in top shape, ongoing equipment needs and protective gear for the volunteer team of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. Safety on the water is our priority.
